Our society encourages and applauds mothers to “bounce back” after having a baby, but overlooks the fact that there are inevitable changes that occur in a woman’s body over the course of pregnancy and birth.  These changes can result in muscle imbalances or compensations, which require pelvic floor and core rehabilitation before returning to their sport or exercise routine, whether they are a seasoned athlete or a novice who wants to increase their fitness or newfound physical outlet of expression.

Typical prenatal care is often full of one size fits all advice, and does not take into consideration each woman’s person history regarding previous injuries; some of which might be caused by past pregnancy and birth itself!  Its an all or nothing approach to care after a mama gives birth; first she is told to stay off her feet (which is often impossible if there are older kids to take care of, as well as house chores that must be done), and then all too often she is “cleared for exercise” magically at 6 weeks postpartums without any specific instruction of how to do it safely, taking into consideration her own individual limitations.

At Island Mamas Midwifery, we provide the recovery care that is often overlooked, and include basic level postpartum rehabilitation as part of our complete package to the mamas we serve. Along with providing birth services, we are also passionate about educating and rehabilitating pregnant and postpartum mamas.

And for the warrior mamas who want to level up their fitness, we have something we like to call

Dani Dougherty CPM, LM, BS Kinesiology Pre/postnatal corrective Exercise Specialist

My own personal journey into fitness began in 2013 at 30 years old. I was a midwife and had 2 kids already, and wanted to be able to keep up with them! I took up weight training as a means to strengthen my body for everyday tasks such as lifting my growing children, and basically being a pack mule - as all moms are :) I also wanted to be stronger as a midwife, as I often hold women up for long periods of time during labor and birth. I didn’t know that I would fall in love with fitness in the process, which I definitely did.

By the time I was pregnant with my 3rd child in my 30s I was an aspiring athlete and didn’t want to lose my hard earned progress and muscle gains. I had already returned to school for a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology; Health and Exercise Science, and was well aware of the fact that there is very little specified training for women who want to strength train safely during pregnancy.  I love learning through experience, so I took the opportunity to take a deep dive into the world of pelvic floor and core function while applying my newfound knowledge to my own body.  Thus began my journey to becoming a Postpartum and Pregnancy Corrective Exercise Specialist, which has been a huge empowerment to me personally, as well as the mamas that I get to share my knowledge with!
